NEW HAVEN-Yale cell biologist James E. Rothman is named one of three recipients of the 2010 Kavli Prize in Neuroscience, marking the second consecutive time a Yale scientist has been a co-recipient of the prestigious, biennial $1 million prize. Rothman, the Fergus F. Wallace Professor of Biomedical Sciences, is chairman of the department of cell biology and helped launch the Yale Center for High Throughput Cell Biology at Yale's West Campus. He was honored for his role in discovering the molecular basis for the release of neurotransmitters, the chemical messengers that ferry information between neurons. In 2008, Pasko Rakic, chairman of the Yale department of neurobiology, shared the inaugural award in neuroscience for his research in the development of the cerebral cortex.

The Kavli Prizes are a partnership between the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research, and the Kavli Foundation, a philanthropic organization founded by entrepreneur Fred Kavli to promote basic science research. Kavli Prizes were also awarded in the fields of nanoscience and astrophysics.

The awards are often called "pre-Nobels" because many recipients have gone on to become Nobel Laureates.

Neil Ducoff's 'No-Compromise Leadership' wins book award

CENTERBROOK-Neil Ducoff's book No-Compromise Leadership received a bronze "IPPY" at the 2010 Independent Publisher Book Awards, May 25 in New York City. The 14th annual event honors the best independently published books. Ducoff's award was in the national business/career/sales category.

Ducoff, an Old Saybrook resident, is founder and CEO of Strategies, a business education and coaching company.

"Independent publishers are the truth tellers," said Awards Director Jim Barnes. "They aren't afraid to stir things up and expose injustice. To these publishers, telling the truth and fighting for a cause comes before making a profit. Luckily, readers respond to a heartfelt call for change when it's done with honesty and creativity. These are the books that win our awards and these are the books that can help solve the world's social, political and economic problems."

Those who govern, having much business on their hands, do not generally like to take the trouble of considering and carrying into execution new projects. The best public measures are therefore seldom adopted from previous wisdom, but forced by the occasion.
